Thermal Roof Systems and Henry® Company Install SPF Insulation Striving For First NET ZERO

Los Angeles (June 14, 2010) - Thermal Roof Systems (TRS), one of the top U.S. installers of spray polyurethane foam (SPF) roofing, and Henry® Company, a leading manufacturer and trusted source for complete building solutions, together will be providing and applying energy efficient, waterproof SPF insulation in the PUNCHouse Project 234, the first energy neutral home to be built in Santa Monica, Calif. TRS and Henry® will also be applying a white reflective coating to the roof to ensure a durable, weather resistant and sun reflective surface, contributing points to the project’s LEED Platinum certification.

Owned by Lisa Ling, a correspondent for Oprah, CNN, Nightline, among others, and her husband, Dr. Paul Song, a radiation oncologist, the PUNCHouse Project 234 will not only serve as a residence, but also as project that highlights the advances of eco home building, finishes, and furnishings, as well as available technologies.

“We are excited to be participating with our partner, Henry Company, in this project, which will showcase the importance of using sustainable building materials and practices,” said Al Kennedy, general manager of TRS.  “SPF roofing and insulation applications are important components for achieving an eco friendly structure and for meeting PUNCHouse Project 234’s environmental goals.”

According to Alan Davenport, Senior Vice President of Building Envelope Systems at Henry Company, “We couldn’t be more pleased to be working with TRS on this project.  Together, we have teamed up to increase awareness surrounding the benefits of energy efficient spray foam roofing and insulation, and this highly visible project gives us the platform to do just that.”

SPF Insulation can be used in new construction and renovations to help homeowners reduce energy usage (and energy bills) by up to 48%*.  Henry’s PERMAX® SPF insulation, as installed in the PUNCHouse Project 234, helps to eliminate convection currents, the leading cause of heat loss. The insulation’s airtight, seamless and rigid seal characteristics help maintain a comfortable constant temperature, ultimately creating a more energy efficient building.  Additionally, PERMAX® insulation acts as a vapor retarder, resisting moisture movement in walls and roofsand helps to prevent mold growth.  PERMAX® insulation also adds structural integrity to a building’s walls and roofs, which is especially important in hurricane and earthquake zones.

ThePUNCHouse Project 234 features a hybrid of two types of Henry’s Permax® SPF insulation – closed-cell foam and open-cell foam — to fill all six cavities, as specified by LEED for Home requirements. Closed-cell SPF insulation is a rigid polyurethane foam system that seals air leaks and helps to eliminate costly air flow where conventional insulation materials fail.  Open-cell SPF insulation is an ultra-light, two part polyurethane insulation system that is water-blown and does not contain any urea formaldehyde, CFCs or HCFCs.  It has a .50 pcf spray-in-place density and provides superior energy efficiency and air infiltration control.

SPF insulation lends itself to a variety of applications on commercial and residential buildings, specifically on flat roof industrial, office, retail, and medical office buildings, as well as wine tanks.  Applied in liquid form on flat roof buildings, SPF expands approximately 30 times its original volume and cures in a short amount of time after application. A layer of elastomeric coating is applied that gives it a durable weather resistant, sun reflective surface. The result is a seamless weather tight membrane that is long lasting and lightweight.

The PUNCHouse Project 234 will have a total of 4,286 sq. ft. of living space, including six bedrooms and five and a half bathrooms. By creating a LEED for Home Platinum Certification with a Net Zero Energy Building system in place, the residence will be the ultimate in efficiency as well as non-toxic. The existing residence was deconstructed and the PUNCHouse team created a 100 percent waste diversion utilizing Habitat for Humanity and Waste Management.
